It uses a one 9 volt battery, and depending on frequency of use, even at heavy use, the battery lasts a long time. Only thing that could of made this model better would of been a back lit display. But Craftsman clearly has addressed that issue with the newer version. Overall a great buy for the right price. I reccomend this to anyone, especially if you can snag it for a good price.
